Engineering plastics

Machined engineering plastics: slip, insulation and agility

Machined engineering plastics complement metals when slip, insulation, chemical resistance or fast prototyping without mould tooling is needed.

POM, polyamide, PEHD, PTFE and PEEK are CNC machined with adapted parameters (speed, coolant, fixturing) to limit distortion and hold dimensions.

Lusinage produces guides, rollers, insulators, functional prototypes and small plastic batches, with optional 3D printing for early validation.

Material benefits

Why machine engineering plastics on CNC?

Slip and wear

POM and PA for guides, rails and controlled-friction parts.

Chemical resistance

PEHD and PTFE for aggressive media or fluid contact.

Insulation and low mass

Dielectric and weight saving vs metal for some components.

Agile prototyping

Fast iteration without moulds, ideal before industrialisation.

Examples

Frequent machined plastic parts

POM or PA guide, rail and slide Plastic bush, roller and friction part Technical insulator and spacer Machined prototype plastic housing PEHD part for impact or abrasion Low-friction PTFE component High-temperature PEEK part (R&D) Insulating bracket and console Functional prototype before tooling

Processes

CNC machining of engineering plastics

CNC milling

Prismatic parts, pockets and holes in engineering plastic: dimensional accuracy and finishes suited to industrial integration.

CNC turning

Shafts, bushes, flanges and rotational parts in engineering plastic with controlled concentricity for transmission and fastening.

EDM

Internal shapes, cavities and challenging geometries in engineering plastic when conventional tooling reaches its limits.

3D printing

Rapid prototyping before CNC machining in engineering plastic or form validation; transition to machined series after mechanical sign-off.

Grades

Engineering plastics machined at Lusinage

Common CNC grades; other materials on request per data sheet.

POM

Excellent slip and dimensional stability — guides, plastic gears, precision parts.

PA6

Mechanical strength and wear — rollers, wheels, lightweight structural parts.

PEHD

Impact and abrasion, low water absorption — shims, heavy guides, handling parts.

PTFE

Very low friction and chemical resistance — seals, bushes, fluid contact parts.

PEEK

High temperature and mechanical performance — R&D, aerospace, medical (grade-dependent).

Sectors

Applications of machined plastics

Automation

Guides, stops and machine contact parts.

Packaging and production lines

Non-metallic contact components, guides and shims.

Chemical and water treatment

PEHD / PTFE parts resistant to agents.

Electronics

Insulators, brackets and low-conductivity parts.

R&D and medical (prototype)

PEEK and specific grades per specification.

Comparison

Machined plastic vs metal

Machined plastic excels in friction and chemistry; metal leads on load and high temperature.

Material Strength Machinability Corrosion Material cost Typical uses
Aluminium Good (5xxx / 6xxx / 7xxx alloys) Excellent Good (anodising possible) Moderate Structures, housings, aerospace and automation parts
Steel Very high (C45, 42CrMo4…) Good Low without treatment Moderate to low Transmission, tooling, heavily loaded parts
Stainless steel High (304L, 316L…) Fair (work hardening) Excellent Higher Food, pharma, marine, chemical
Brass Fair Excellent Good Moderate Connectors, fluids, bushes, precision parts
Engineering plastics Grade-dependent Good (adapted speeds) Excellent (chemical) Moderate Guides, insulators, prototypes, short runs

Frequently asked questions

Engineering plastic machining: FAQ

POM for slip and precision; PA6 for higher mechanical load — geometry and lubrication matter.

Yes for prototypes and small runs; moulding wins at high volume.

CNC for final mechanical properties; 3D for form validation — we advise by constraint.

Fixturing and adapted passes limit distortion; leave stock if needed.

Yes with specific strategy (low stiffness) — small to medium parts.

FDA grades possible when available; state food contact on quote.

Stable when conditioned; functional dimensions per drawing with thermal clearance if needed.

CNC for holes, slots and complex parts; simple cutting for basic plates.

Common assemblies; machine separately then assemble in-house or with integrator.

STEP or PDF with desired grade, quantity and temperature / fluid constraints.
